Yaz Deep Vein Thrombosis ( DVT )

Health Problems due to Yaz prescription

YAZ DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS ( DVT )

The extreme side effects Drospirenone induces have caused both the FDA and medical agencies around the world to investigate the safety of Yaz. Underreporting of adverse drug reactions may mean that the actual percentage of severe side effects, including DVT is underestimated. In the British Medical Journal, the Dutch College of General Practitioners suggest that its members switch from Yasmin, or Yaz to other forms of birth control, referring to the 40 reported cases of DVT that include the death of a 17 year-old who suddenly collapsed and died after taking Yasmin for six months.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis and why should you be concerned about DVT? Venous thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein (venous). In many cases, venous thrombosis occurs in the "deep veins" in the legs, thighs, or pelvis and is known as a Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. Extreme pain in the leg or pelvic region and swelling of the affected limb or pelvic region should be red flags if you or someone you know is taking Yaz.

The risk with Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella stems from the new 4th generation of synthetic progestin (a hormone) called Drospirenone. Drospirenone is a known diuretic that leaches sodium from blood and tissue including the heart. Elevated potassium salt levels in blood favor the process of blood clotting. Areas of the circulatory system where blood flow is relatively slow offer more time and better chance of blood clot formation. The large veins found deep in the legs and pelvis are such areas of circulation involved in DVT.

Another complication of DVT is that the clot can continue to grow causing blockage of that vein. When blockage is prolonged, areas around the blocked vein or veins get cut off from nutrient and oxygen supply brought by blood. In some instances where DVT is not detected and treated early, amputations have occurred.

The greatest risk with DVT occurs when a blood clot breaks off and is carried in circulation to other blood vessels. When the blood clot reaches smaller blood vessels, it creates a blockage. This can then cause three other conditions that stem from DVT. For instance, if the clot breaks away and is deposited in the coronary arteries that supply the heart with blood, the person is likely to suffer a heart attack. DVT can lead to pulmonary embolism if the clot is deposited in the lungs or a stroke if this happens in the brain. The heart, brain and lungs are the most vital organs for life and if affected may result in definite death. Immediate medical attention is necessary for DVT which is considered a medical emergency.

In some cases, the positive effects of a drug will offset the severity of the side effect of that medication. In the case of Yaz, the side effects such as DVT far outweigh the results. There are a myriad of other medications for contraception, acne treatment, and treatment of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) that do not present an increased risk of death. You should not be a victim of a severe disease like DVT because Bayer and the FDA have not yet pulled Yaz off of the market.
